Where do I start? Holistic Therapies

There are times when we all need some extra ‘something’ to help us with an issue in our lives – whether that’s a physical, mental, emotional or spiritual issue. Alongside medical intervention there are a wide selection of ‘alternative’ or ‘holistic’ therapies on offer. These are ways to get extra help to deal with symptoms, feelings or thoughts. But how do you choose what might be the best therapy for you? What is the difference between Reiki and EFT? How much can you expect to pay? And how often will you need to have the therapy to get the benefits?

First, it’s always good to ask around for personal experiences of treatments as well as for recommendations. Your family & friends may have very useful feedback about what a treatment is, how they felt having that therapy and what they thought of the practitioner who gave the treatment. They may suggest more than one type of therapy or give you names of several practitioners. If you are uncertain about asking people for recommendations you can also do web searches or visit the web sites of governing bodies (there is a useful, though not complete, list at www.webhealth.co.uk). There is a lot of very useful information on the internet but it’s important to remember that what you experience in any therapy may not be exactly what you have read about as each of us is different.

Another way to find out what might be the best for you is to call into the Centre or phone us. You can speak to practitioners and ask questions about what would be involved in any particular session. Practitioners prefer to discuss your individual circumstances before recommending a therapy as it’s important to offer you something that will help your personal needs. They will also be happy to discuss cost, how many treatments & what outcomes you can expect. You can also ask about the practitioner’s qualifications, membership of a governing body & insurance cover. Whilst not all holistic treatments require or have these it’s a guide for you to how your practitioner approaches their work. Practitioners may also be happy to put you in contact with other clients who have used their services so you can ask questions of someone who has directly experienced the therapy.

If you feel you have found a therapy and a practitioner who can offer what you need it’s time to book an appointment. Many practitioners offer ‘Taster’ sessions at a reduced rate so you can trial the treatment – ask if that is a possibility with your chosen practitioner. After your initial session let the practitioner know how it was for you. Practitioners appreciate feedback so they can improve on aspects of their service. They are happy to answer any questions you might have & will also give you any ‘after care’ information that may be necessary as a follow up your treatment.

There are lots of really great holistic practitioners associated with our Centre so I hope you are encouraged to find the therapy and practitioner who is right for you.
